Review by Erin O’Riordan

Cause and Effect Poetry by Chessly Nesci (2009, AG Press) is a diverse collection of poems and poetic short story/essay/ruminations. They range from recession-era ("Economy," "Dream House") to romantic ("Dream," "Crush") to inspiring ("Strength") to fairy-tale-like ("The Hidden One"). Along the way, Chessly meditates on such topics as the tragic loss of her father, an emotionally abusive past relationship, and personal insecurity. She deals with these weighty topics with a hopeful, yet realistic, determination. Which is not to say she can't be lighthearted: see, for example, her loving ode to coffee. The book concludes with eleven short-short stories, the best of which are "Flying," "Summer Love" and "Blind Date." (But that's just me; I love romance!) I look forward to more from this talented poet.

~ Dream House~

Everyone must have a dream house

The one perfect on the outside

But maybe a little messy on the inside

We can change it any way we want

To make it the way we like it

That shows who we are

No one should tell us how to decorate it

It’s our touch that makes it special

We are happiest in our little house

Protected from the outside

And very content on the inside

It is a place to be ourselves and unwind

Escape into our own world

And be whoever we want to be

Please don’t take away our house

It is part of who we have become

Our little security blanket

We need it to survive

A place to rest our feet

I pray today that there won’t be a day

Without the comfort, security

And love of my special dream house
